法國北部港市加萊（calais）渡輪公司員工大罷工，導致大量滯留在該區域內的非法移民，以暴力威脅強行湧上開往英國的大貨車。身歷其境的英國司機形容，這是二戰以來最混亂的跨越英法海峽經驗，加萊港仿如戰場。
受到大罷工影響，本周以來加萊港貨車大排長龍，車陣長達30英里，接近比利時邊境。在酷暑下，卡車司機們除了必須耐心等待外，還必須防範非法移民藉機偷襲，強行登車偷渡到英國。
一名司機告訴英國媒體，偷渡客不斷襲擊困在道路上的大貨車。最常見的情況是，一名身體魁梧的東歐男性先行摸索到貨車後面，敲開門後，揮手讓一群躲藏在附近樹蔭下的阿富汗和其他非法移民，強行登上貨車。若貨車內的位置不夠，或者只能容納數人，其他的人就等待「襲擊」下一輛貨車。
非法偷渡情況在加萊並非首見，長久以來，這一直是英法兩國邊境管理署爭執不下的問題。英國政府反覆向法國政府提出抗議，要求法國主管機構加強偷渡管理，但在抓不勝抓的前提下，情況日益嚴重。
「過去企圖偷渡者至少不會使用暴力，現在他們手中持刀和重槌等武器」，一名英國司機說，這些偷渡客威脅鎖上車門的司機讓他們上車，否則便打破車子的後視鏡和車窗。許多經歷這種情況的駕駛坦承，覺得自己的生命受到威脅，「他們在光天化日下施暴，我們卻看不到一名警察出來執法。」
英國內政部一名發言人表示，2014年企圖從法國加萊越過跨海隧道到英國被捉到的非法偷渡客達3萬9000人，為2013年的2倍，2012年的3倍。
從今年4月到6月，已有超過3000名移民在加萊地區宿營，伺機偷渡到英國，預料這個夏天還會有更多移民湧進加萊等待機會。
